I Love Murano!
Murano glass has been handcrafted on the island of Murano, just off Venice, since the 14th century. (Before then, it was made in Venice itself—until the glassmakers were moved to Murano to reduce the city’s fire risk!) Today, authentic Murano glass is still created using traditional techniques passed down through generations.
Murano glass is renowned for its exceptional quality, rich jewel‑like colours, and its incredible clarity and transparency. Only glass created on the island of Murano can be called genuine Murano glass, although sometimes the beads are still referred to as ‘Venetian Glass’.
I particularly love the vibrant colours. The depth is extraordinary, especially in beads lined with silver or gold foil, each one catching the light beautifully. These elements pair so perfectly with sterling silver, resulting in jewellery that feels both striking and timeless.
I’ve visited the island once and brought back a selection of unique beads that I now incorporate into my designs. I’m lucky enough to receive occasional “top‑ups” when family visit Venice, giving me access to beads I can’t find in the UK. I also source authentic Murano glass beads from a small number of trusted UK suppliers, ensuring I use only the finest authentic pieces.
